Urban Bee Education showcases the amazing world of pollinators in your own school’s backyard. Tailored to your curriculum needs Students will explore the importance of Australian Native Bees and Honey Bees as an integral part of our food system, and how these amazing little creatures form a fundamental component of our food web.

Mapped to the Australian Curriculum V9 and your needs, Students may discover;

  • The biology of European and Native bees

  • Lean about some of the 1700+ Native bee species found in Australia

  • How and why bees pollinate our food, and their role in our food web

  • Discuss challenges effecting bees such as the Varroa mite and pesticides

  • Learn how to care for Australian Native Stingless beehives

  • Discover why household lawn chemicals are harming our bees

  • How and what to plant for a pollinator friendly garden

  • How to create habitat in your backyard to support our pollinators

Students will then get their hands dirty… and sticky with some hands on activities

  • View inside a real stingless native bee hive, identifying the brood, honey and pollen stores and maybe even spot the Queen!

  • Creating pollinator friendly seedballs to spread around the school or local community to improve floral resources for our bees and butterflies

  • Taste honeycomb cut straight from the frame

  • Option to create native solitary bee hotels to be used around the school to improve habitat

  • Option to Cold press their own take home jar of honey

  • Option to roll their own beeswax candle

  • Option to make their own beeswax lipbalm

Learning outcomes - Students will have a deeper understanding of how bees play an integral part of our food web. Challenges our bees and pollinators face with the use of chemicals and loss of habitat. The habitat requirements of different native bee species and how to restore local habitats.

The STEM Discovery Table 🐝🔬🌱

Our STEM Discovery Table is designed for schools and early learning centres, giving students the chance to connect classroom learning with the real world of bees and pollinators.

Students can:

  • Use a microscope to study bees, pollen grains, and the varroa mite

  • Test honey with a refractometer to measure moisture content

  • Observe live Australian native bees in a safe hive

  • Taste honey and compare flavours

  • Build bee hotels for solitary bees, roll beeswax candles, and make seed balls (optional activities at additional cost)

The Discovery Table links directly to the Australian Curriculum, supporting outcomes in:

  • Science: biological sciences, life cycles, ecosystems, classification, sustainability

  • Mathematics: measurement, data collection, comparing results

  • Design & Technologies: creating bee hotels, applying sustainable design

  • Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF): exploring the natural world, sensory learning, building curiosity

👉 Book the STEM Discovery Table for your school or centre and give your students a hands-on experience that’s curriculum-aligned, engaging, and unforgettable.

NEW Incursion extension

Alongside our regular pollinator incursions, we now offer an optional inquiry-based STEM add-on for classes wanting to go deeper into scientific investigation:

Investigating Honey: An Inquiry-Based Learning Experience

This add-on extends students’ understanding of pollinators through a real-world science, investigating the water content of different honey.

Investigation Question:
Will this store safety in a jar, or will it ferment?

During the session, students work through the inquiry process just like scientists. They form a hypothesis, test different honey with a real refractometer, record and compare results, and use evidence to decide whether the honey can be safely stored in a jar.

What students will do

Students will:

  • Form a hypothesis and explain their reasoning

  • Use a refractometer to test multiple honey samples

  • Record data accurately using age-appropriate tables

  • Compare results between jars

  • Make an evidence-based recommendation: jar or eat now?

Benefits of the program

  • Complements our existing pollinator programs

  • Aligned to Australian Curriculum v9 (QLD) – Science Inquiry Skills

  • Suitable for Prep to Year 6, with built-in differentiation

  • Uses a real scientific tool commonly used in beekeeping

This add-on works well for schools looking to strengthen inquiry-based learning, data literacy, and real-world STEM connections, while continuing to build students’ understanding of bees and pollinators.
