Bee In Schools Program

Native Bee Education Through Hands-On Learning 🐝🔬

Our Bees in Schools programs provide Australian native bee incursions that put native bee education at the heart of hands-on learning. Students don’t just read about bees—they explore habitats, conduct STEM investigations, and participate in interactive activities, fostering a deep understanding of pollination, biodiversity, and sustainability.

Hands-on learning experiences include:

  • Hybrid and Mini Solitary Bee Hotels: Students build and observe structures designed for native solitary bees, learning how different species nest and the importance of habitat creation.

  • STEM Discovery Table: Students use microscopes to examine pollen, study bee anatomy, and explore the ecological role of bees. Tools like refractometers allow them to test honey moisture content, connecting science directly to real-world applications.

  • Beeswax Activities: Rolling candles or making lip balms teaches about beeswax production and its practical uses, linking biology, design, and creativity.

  • Pollinator-Friendly Seed Balls: Students design and create seed balls to support native bees, combining environmental stewardship with hands-on gardening and ecological science.

Through these Australian native bee incursions, students develop:

  • Observation and critical thinking skills as they examine native bee habitats and behavior

  • Problem-solving abilities through designing and constructing bee hotels

  • STEM understanding by linking biological concepts to experiments and practical applications

  • Environmental awareness by learning how native bees support ecosystems and how humans can protect them

By participating in these hands-on incursions, students are inspired to care for Australian native bees, gain practical STEM skills, and engage in pollinator conservation. These activities align with the Australian Curriculum, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong respect for native bees.
